Hello there. My experience with martial arts started when I was about 8 or 9. It was Uechi-Ryu Karate. I remember very little of this as it was 20 years ago. I do remember enjoying it & getting a second stripe on a yellow belt though. I went to another Sensai after I could no longer attend the Dojo. This other guy taught in a middle school gym and well, I soon quit after that. My only other martial arts experiences are much later from random self defense courses taught at a community college by the local police, (which included handgun & shotgun range time as well). They did say it was loosely based on Aikido.
Smash cut to now, I'm 29 working a desk job during the day and on the weekends I work door at a bar in Oakland, California. Trust me it's a good part of Oakland I haven't been jumped, shot, stabbed or the victim of robbery at all so far this year. Though I have been challenged to a fight, repeatedly. Never took them up on it. I figure I need some sort of physical activity that was dual purposed with some sort of self defense training since I don't lift weights any more due to an injury that I rehabbed with physical therapy & yoga for dummies, not joking on that last part I love that daily dozen. And don't worry, I'm not one of those douchebag mightier-than-thou door guys, though I do look the part.
So, dual purpose physical activity & self defense with a heavy dose of practicality? First I went to my doctor for a complete physical & asked if I was ok for martial arts, check! I was thinking Krav Maga or maybe Jeet Kune Do when I realised that I know nothing about either other than their reputations. So I talked to a friend thats been taking Jeet Kune Do & Kali for a few years. He says it's come in handy when he mouthed off a bit too much one night. I didn't ask him to elaborate what he meant by that. I checked into the school he attends using the handy dandy Bullshido Finding a good martial arts school article as a baseline for judgement. Looks good. I took a class & I didn't even look into Krav Maga after that. I got hooked. I suppose Krav Maga is still be on the table for a later date if I can find a decent school. Though this is the Bay Area, I'm sure there are a few.
As for bacon? I make my own mayonaisse using bacon drippings & avocado oil as the base fat and my cholesterol is perfect. Me & bacon, we have an understanding.
