With my violent herion addict brother yesterday. So I train in the martial arts(muay thai), and something happened the other day and I couldn't throw a punch.I was getting punched and kicked and did nothing about it but ball up and block..There was no retaliation from me, everything I learned I had forgot. It's weird..what happened? Is it just because I'm a passive person and just don't have it in me? The fear of getting hurt (which is stupid because I have eaten some pretty hard hits before)?.I always thought if I was in a situation like that, I'd fight back..But I didn't..Maybe I should be asking one of my instructors?

Looking into martial arts training for my nephews Las Vegas, NV

Hello all

My sister contacted me a few weeks ago regarding martial arts training for her kid. She lives in Las Vegas, NV, in the Henderson area. I have one nephew who is over 4 years old. The others are a bit way too young to start, but wants them to follow in her father's footsteps as he was TKD. She wants to get him involved into karate or TKD. She also doesn't want her kids developing cauliflower ears. Her husband(my brother in law) really wants him to get involved in BJJ, and says that ground/grappling is the most important. They were conflicting each other, so she called me up.

I was in Judo for a class, and we had Dustin Denes(who was amazing) as a guest instructor one evening. After rolling, I asked what art should my nephews get involved in. He was adamant that they start in a Judo club and scholastic wrestling. He said that the BJJ will come later after a person knows how to clinch, throw, and takedown. My judo instructor also agreed.

Since striking is my primary background, I believe that Western Boxing should be the first art that a young kid should learn. I feel that after one has a very good grasp on boxing, then good Okinawan Karate or Muay Thai could be added later at about 10-13yrs of age. Of course when a young person starts karate or muay thai, they should never give up boxing. I told my sister that TKD isn't as good as it was in the 1970's when our father was a black belt because of what occurred during the mid/late 1980's with it becoming a family hobby.

So the consensus is that my nephews should start training in Judo and Boxing. If there is a scholastic wrestling team, I told her to let the kids try it out as well. She mentioned a school that is a few blocks away from her house. The school is a kung fu school that also teaches kid's judo, boxing/kickboxing, escrima, and kung fu. I told her to enroll them into judo and boxing. She doesn't want them messing around with sticks, so escrima is out. I told her not to waste their time in the kid's kung fu even though it is a kung fu school. Some of CMA is valuable, but a base of boxing/judo should be a priority.

After awhile when they get older, if they are super serious about fighting, I told her that Phil Dunalp's school would be the best choice. Phil also recommended UNLV's Judo club as well. I also see that their is a Kyokushin Karate school called Shinkyokushinkai. I also found a Uechi Karate school as well nearby.

First things first. The school is called Kung Fu Academy Las Vegas, and the website is called http://www.lvshaolin.com/

Here is a video of what I would think an all around skilled kid would look like:

Here is their judo and boxing programs:

Tell me what you guys think about this school? What do you think of it and their programs? What do you think of their other programs? If you live or know about Las Vegas, are their other schools out there that are better for kids?

OK, nothing that grandiose... we DO have some talented artists in our midst (I don't count myself among them, I'm more like a 1980's Xerox machine that's low on toner and needs a new fuser). It's been done, before (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROkrrYYkUhQ). But, this one could be OURS, and it would be glorious.

A song music video, written, performed, and produced by Bullies.

I don't even know how to start such a project, other than posting this.

Sound off as to what you can contribute to such a project, and let's get this rolling? Or, deride me and get back to training.

Systemic Over Training of the Right Body Kick

So this is something that's been nagging at me. In any striking art I've studied - karate, muay thai, MMA - the kicking technique which gets the most attention spent on it in padwork and drilling is the right round kick to the body. It makes for a pretty easy combination to teach students - jab, cross, right kick, reset; it's easy to hold thai pads for, or one one of those big karate kick shields. Makes sense that it comes up a lot in drilling.
It is also one of the techniques that I use the least in actual practice. In terms of "bread and butter" kicks, I throw nearly as many inside leg kicks as everything else put together. If I want to work the body, I can do more damage by throwing a liver kick off the left leg. If I'm following up a one-two, I can throw the right leg kick with a much higher percentage than the right body kick. If I'm inclined to throw the right kick high, I can get a lot more bang for my buck by throwing it to the head. Body kicks put me at a higher percentage of having the leg trapped than either head or leg kicks. All in all, it just seems like (as far as round kicks go) the right body kick is the least amount of damage for the most amount of effort and risk.
So why do we keep doing this? Is my experience with striking arts simply an anomaly? Does the right body kick have some grand advantage I'm overlooking? Or is this just a totally over-esteemed technique?

So i got 2 bjj comps coming up. 1 next saturday that is white belt only round robin contest at a local mma gym that hold a comp every month (alternating from colored belts, kids and then white). It'll be my first comp where ill be competing (was at the victorian championships last weekend supporting classmates and watching everyone else).

The next comp im competing in is in 3 weeks and its an inhouse comp thats only for members of affiliated schools of the organisation my school is under.

So here is what i need an opinion on or tips. Im thinking of doing some private lessons in judo to get some practise on a few throws. Ive learn a few throws in the past and for some reason feel more comfortable standing than doing single/double leg take downs which i know well enough. There are some people who play better from the top or bottom. I prefere top as i can usually maintain the position better and i suck at sweeps.

I been doing bjj for almost 5 months and train 6-8 hours a week.

Koral MKM gi size question (bordering two sizes)

Hi Bullies,

I've had a long time away from BJJ, and in the process of rehabbing an injury, I lost a significant amount of weight. The only one of my three gis that somewhat fits is an A2 size, 2009 vintage Koral Classic, that was a just-legal fit at 173cm (5'8") and about 92kg (203lbs). Now, at 74kg (163lbs), it is a little baggy around the armpits, the skirt goes down to mid-thigh as it should at the front and around the bottom of my butt at the back, and with arms parallel to the ground, the sleeves end right where my wrist meets the bottom of my hand, though I have to pull the sleeves taut as they bag and bunch up a little.

I am now considering buying a Koral MKM (new style), and I am right on the border of A1 and A2. The local Koral rep. recommended trying an A1 and returning it for an A2 if it doesn't fit, but I am curious to know if any of you have any other experiences/ideas. Is there any difference in the sizing of the older Classic gis vs the new MKMs? If an older Classic A2 is a touch baggy as described, will a new MKM A1 be too small?

Original yang thai chi chuan, pa qua and Hsing-I on the street/defence

Hello all.

I wanted to discuss the topic. Just how effective is the Original Yang Thai chi chuan, Pa Qua and Hsing-I combinations compared to say MT or BJJ or even boxing for that matter on the street or in a pure defense situation?

I haven't been training in this style for very long but before I actually commit years to it, I would actually like to hear from some guys who have been at a throw down or have had real life experience with these arts or something similar. Have you ever seen a traditional Kung fu fighter go toe to toe with with say an MMA fighter in real life? What about a street fight? Post your experience...

I understand MT may be the go to because of the effectiveness in dealing damage with less complexity as compared to many styles of Kung Fu I also understand the outcome of a fight usually comes down to the ability of the fighter, but let face it there's other factors too like speed, timing, complexity of the moves energy breathing etc..

This is totally from a street defense situation not style vs style, I personally like the idea of MT but would like to see what other experienced people have to say.

Any info appreciated as always.

Thanks Guys!!

Ok so here's the thing I get that hippies want to save the planet and have a brighter tomorrow, but they really need a better game plan. You see NO ONE is going to have bugs for breakfast, NO ONE wants to drive a car that looks like an Easter egg, and finally NO ONE is ever going to think that this is sexy : Hippie hogs: Making solar bikes sexyhttp://www.greatbigstory.com/stories/sexy-eco-friendly-bikes/?xrs=CNNAPP

Even calling that fucking smug retarded thing a hog is just an insult. Seriously hippies if you really want to change the world you're going to need a way better approach than dorky **** like this.

"Biggest Loser" contestants metabolism adjusts dramatically downward; weight regained

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/02/he...loss.html?_r=0

According to this NY Times articles, many of the "Biggest Loser" contestants who had lost tremendous amounts of weight regained it back. Apparently, a big part of this was an incredible slowing of their metabolism. Studies showed that their caloric needs became temendously less than normal, which caused relatively small amounts of food to make them gain huge amounts of weight. For example, according to the article, Danny Cahill now burns 800 fewer calories per day than would be expected for someone of his size.

From the article:

Quote:

“It is frightening and amazing,” said Dr. Hall, an expert on metabolism at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. “I am just blown away.”
To me, this really shuts down the chorus over the years that if someone is fat they must be immoral, or something like that. The Biggest Loser contestants have put in a lot more work and discipline than most people into losing weight, and the study now demonstrates a quantitative metabolic disadvantage that has emerged towards keeping the weight off. Of course, I wish we knew what the solution was for people to be able to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Real talk, I woke up this morning to IBJJF harassment. At this point, I'm just issuing an open challenge. You on the IBJJF logs? You want beef? If you're down, I'll **** you up. If you kinda passive aggressive, on the fence, but still spitting IBJJF propoganda? Come see me as well. Let's finish this. This aint IBJJF rules though and I don't intend to fight ONE of you. I'm here to fight ALL of you.

Can we trust video footage anymore?

So recently I posted a thread about a new hoverboard which seemed too good to be true:
http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=125454

Most of us thought there is no way it could be real. Pretty sure we were wrong though given the information available at the time high skepticism was probably rational.

Anyway this got me thinking about epistemology in the modern world. Video editing and CG has got so cheap and easy that we can see two high quality videos of a scene from different angles and still think it was a hoax.

Mainstream media research is appalling, I've seen countless cases of them promoting scams, interviewing trolls and getting the most basic of facts wrong.

Good CG is now indistinguishable from the real thing cheap and easily. I've even seen videos posted of helicopter thermal vision in videogames which fooled most of the people in a Youtube comment section. At this rate in a few years there will probably be lots of video game footage passed as real.

How often does the news show faked footage (knowingly or unknowingly)?

Is it going to get to the stage where we never know what to believe unless we have 5 independent witnesses?

What implications does this have?
