Best way to maximize cardio?

I see that cardio seems to be a major component that separates good from great. I'm not training for anything specific, but i want my cardio to be peak- as good as I can get it. I know jogging on a treadmill doesn't accomplish this, which I'm fine with because I hate the treadmill. What is the best approach to maximize my cardio? And how often should I do it?
