Fake BJJ and Judo Blackbelt - Article in Jiu-Jitsu Times

I did a search before starting this thread and didn't find anything on this guy. Since him being a fraud already seem established, I wasn't sure if I should post this here or YMAS. If it needs to be moved, please feel free. Master Pedro Sauer was sharing it on his FB page, so I figured he was trying to get the word out.

Quote:

There is one thing that is an unfortunate aspect of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world that everybody who has ever practiced this art form has had to deal with at some point, which is that there are a lot of pretenders out there who claim to be something they are not in that universe.

That situation has recently reared its ugly head once again as alleged Fake Judo 8th dan & BJJ Coral Belt Rudy Rodriguez has been exposed to the world now thanks to both the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo communities in the country of Mexico. The reason this man was exposed and that the whole situation became public is that his claims of status in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Judo worlds are both unverified by anybody in each community, which means that he is a fraud, so keep your eyes open for this fake or any of his students, because there is a good chance they are all frauds as well.

Double guard pulls you say?

Better start working that 50/50

Though only 7% sub victory with the straight ankle, that makes sense though and I do believe they are not allowed to transition the straight into a heel hook or a toe hold.

Jim Giant's Adherence/Reward Template V1

I'd like feedback on this fitness template I've put together, positive or negative.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This template is designed for the average guy/girl, especially those who have struggled adhering to programs in the past. Obsessive fitness nuts however would be better off with other programs designed to fit their goals.

So far I'm trialling this on my girlfriend (Olivia), she's strong as hell but sometimes has trouble getting motivated for other aspects of fitness and disability places certain restrictions on what she can do and when.

There are lots of fantastic programs out there but a common issue I see is that if you're not getting close to 100% adherence they lose the majority of their benifits. Unfortunately the average person isn't great at adhering to programs, they'll skip days frequently due to lack of motivation, complicated work schedules or any number of other reason.

This template however fully embraces this fact, it should drastically improve fitness even with a 60% adherence and aims to improve adherence over time through rewards.

Rewards

What sets this apart from other programs is rather than just tracking exercise performance this template also has you earning points each week for every exercise you perform. At the end of each day you mark off how many exercises you did on a tally chart and total it up at the end of each week.

You are allowed to treat yourself for achieving certain adherence thresholds.
As standard these thresholds will be:
Tier 1 treat for 67%
Tier 2 treat for 100% (plus the tier 1 treat)

Treats can be anything as long as they aren't 1000s of calories, they don't have to be food but allowing yourself a desert once a week would be a good example.

For people who really struggle you may want to start with 50% and 75% or lower and add 2.5% each week till you reach 75% and 100%.

Scoring you like a video game and getting rewards should physiologically give greater motivation to do what you're supposed to do. I'd recommend the program and tally chart be stuck on your fridge or anywhere other people can see it giving you another reason to to have high adherence and not look like a loser.

Simplicity

This template could be made more complicated by awarding a different number of points depending on the exercise and having more reward tiers. You can do this if you want but people are often put off by complexity so that's why I'm keeping this simple.

You may need to track your exercise performance on an app or notebook but the program itself plus adherence chart should easily fit on to a sheet of letter (A4) paper with big writing.

Takes in to account equipment, lifestyle limitations

This goes without saying but not everyone has access to a decent gym with every piece of possible equipment so this needs to be factored in. Using Olivia's program as an example she only has gym access on Fridays so this is the only free weight session. She has a pullup bar at home so we make use of that and the rest is callisthenics.

Progression

The vast majority of exercises need some form of progression. For strength increase weight reps or sets and for flexibility try to stretch further each time etc. For detailed information about a sensible progression scheme ask me or a qualified trainer.

High frequency training and aim to workout every day

High frequency is important for most naturals but for this template frequency is essential. For each aspect of fitness and each body part you want to improve you should have at least 3 exercises on different days. This way if you don't comply on a given day you're still training the movement twice that week which is enough to see great progress if you push yourself.

The template should have some form of exercise every day. Some of the workouts might only be 15 minutes but getting started is the hardest part for a lot of people and this should help habit forming.

Additional exercise aren't awarded points but are strongly encouraged.

The actual details and exercise selection of the program should be customised depending on the individual's goals by somebody who knows what they are doing but the principles I've laid out need to be adhered to or your aren't running my template.

Here is a sample program I wrote for Olivia using this template as a guideline.

So I was thinking about starting a new youtube video series I want to call "MA Pro-Tips", where we dissect basic problems in martial arts Grappling, Striking and MMA. I wanted to get some ideas on where to go with future episodes as I already know where I want to go with the first five. Any ideas?

Take on Gracie Barra today?

Hi everyone,

My apologies in advance for what might be a loaded, or ridiculously broad, question. What is the take at this point on the state of Gracie Barra? What is their focus?

Several allegations and a great deal of discussion was had here: http://www.bullshido.net/forums/show...ht=barra+ibjjf

It is also my understanding that they have the reputation for being more sport rather than defense focused (sorry for the sport vs. street argument, yet again). However, I saw that they had updated their fundamentals curriculum, which supposedly put some self-defense back in along with some mma focus (striking on the ground, etc.), which should certainly be valuable for self-defense purposes: http://gbsanclemente.com/2012/11/fun...ive-this-week/

Any thoughts on this? I like the fact that they have a defined fundamentals curriculum, and it seems like a good deal of thought went into it.

I'm honestly not as familiar with the lineage of GB as I am of that from Helio (though I recognize they all trained together at one point), so anything there (good, bad, or neutral) is appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance, and mea culpla if I am beating the proverbial dead horse here.

Huh, an actual terrorist attack?

So, Brady bill failed. "Watch lists," failed. If anything, this incident tells me that we need to be better armed (and trained).

As some of you know our good friend and Jiu Jitsu instructor was savagely attacked by a hospital security team a few days ago and is currently being held against his will there. His fiancee Jaryn Finch was also battered during the incident but she is now meeting with several attorneys in order to have Jordan released.
The hospital is holding him under the guise of "evaluation". Basically they want to keep him there for 20 days. I'm pretty sure this is illegal. You can't just decide to keep people no matter how badly you want to learn jiu jitsu. I'm making a donation to Jordan so that he can get a real attorney and get released from the hospital where he was jumped by security guards. Attorney's are super expensive but in this case I really believe it's important to get him out sooner rather than later. Jordan Tabor has spent his career teaching both adults and children to be positive members of their community through Jiu Jitsu. He's taught both at Redline Fight Sports and at the Harvard Jiu Jitsu club. He's a great instructor and does not deserve to be treated this way without due process. Please make a donation to help someone we all learned a great deal from.

Rolling with your teenage kids

A few forum members have mentioned attending BJJ classes with their teen or tween-age kids.

Do you have any advice for when your child is too old for the kids class and has to roll with you and the other the adults?

Have you ever had to go into parental mode because:
  • Your kid was about to do/just did something stupid?
  • Someone was about to do/just did something stupid to your kid?

What expectations, if any, did you talk about with your teen/tween regarding behavior? Is there anything beyond being respectful and not spazzing?

How did you prepare them for the first few months of feeling like you're inside a washing machine?

And on a petty note: Did you ever feel territorial or even jealous of your BJJ space.

Des Moines Jiu-Jitsu - Des Moines, Iowa

I am out of town visiting family in Des Moines, and they were kind enough to let me do a drop in. I contacted them ahead of time on FB and they said that they welcome visitors. I showed up a bit early, signed the waiver and paid the mat fee ($20) and got ready for class.

In both my numbers above and my discussion below, please keep in mind that this was a Fundamentals Class, not an advanced class, competition class, etc. The class was made up of predominantly white belts, many of whom were pretty new, along with a few blue belts and some purple belts helping out and working drills with everyone else. Also, I marked what I did for striking because I saw thai pads and their website says they have it, so I presume they do, but I was there for a Jiu-jitsu class and did not witness the Thai Boxing class. I marked what I did for weapons because it was a BJJ class. I marked what did for aliveness because it was a fundamentals class, so it wasn't free sparring. I have no doubt that there is a good deal of full on sparring to be had as well.

Class started off with a good warm up: some jogging followed by shrimping, bear crawl to different positions, front and back rolls, and falls.

The class was focused on a series of movements to pass guard and the stack up your opponent. The head instructor broke things down in three parts, and then had us drill each phase with multiple partners before moving onto the next. This class lasted for an hour, and for the half hour afterwards, the instructor had us move to positional sparring in a drill he called "king of the hill". There were around 22 students, and he started with 9 pairs in the middle. The pairs started out with one person in guard. The person in guard was supposed to try to pass, the person on the bottom was supposed to maintain guard. Students at higher ranks were free to work submissions. If you "won" you stayed in. If you "lost" you went to wall and a fresh person came to spar the guy who had just won. The person who "lost" then waited until another spot opened and then jumped back in. This last bit lasted for 30 minutes, and it was a butt-kicker. They were having an open mat after that, but I was done in, so I took off. I probably got a chance to roll a bit with about 7 or 8 different people in that 30 minutes, which was pretty cool.

All in all, this was a great place to train. Everyone was welcoming and super cool, and there was a bit of the usual good-natured ball busting between people who had been there a while. The purple belts went out of their way to help me when I drilled with them, and they tapped me with supreme ease when we sparred at the end. If you find yourself in or around Des Moines, IA, I definitely recommend it.

I have always loved the cartoon "Ranma 1/2". The method of the saotome school of anything goes is the same of cross-training. Which is the best kind of cross-training to get a "Ranma-fighting style"?

For example can i assume there must be judo, karate or nippon kempo etc. since he wears a white gi with a black belt and often uses throws (judo), straight line punches (shotokan karate) etc.? Maybe a style of kung fu with a lot of kicks? Maybe muay thai? What do you think is the best combination of arts? (For example: judo + this style of karate + this style of kung fu...). I hope you can help me :)
